The Great Septic Tank Saga: From Digging to Chardonnay If you've ever had the idea…

A major project: the roof
How time flies. On December 6, the new roof was placed over the old one and before you know it, it is already August. Our cottage was fully booked over the summer via Airbnb and Natuurhuisje.nl: how much we enjoyed the nice guests and the beautiful weather. We will tell you what happened in the meantime.
The roof comes off? No, on it!
As you may have read in this previous blog, the mill’s current roof is leaking. Such a leak that it needs to be replaced quickly.
On December 6, 7:30 in the morning, the big 10-ton crane pulled into our yard. After some discussion and positioning of the crane, the new roof hung in the ropes at 10:30. At 10:50, the new roof was in place. A big burden fell off us. A big compliment to Koos because he had everything figured out and without any significant problem the new roof slid over the old one. Chapeau!
In the months that followed, the old roof was removed from under the new roof. For the first time in 15 years, the building is now dry and work can begin to turn it into full-fledged housing. With the emphasis on the word started, of course the chores are not finished with just a new floor and roof. This part took us almost a year, but because of that we had a lot of time to dream about beautiful workshops we can give at this place, an expansion of the places to stay, and much more. What potential this place has!
Farewell to our horses Jolente and Leo
In April this year we said goodbye to the horses. No, not literally, we accommodated them at an equestrian center nearby. In the winter months the horses could not stand outside on our land. Because of the many rain showers, the land was so soggy that it became dangerous for them. They could only be in the horse trough. Also, the daily maintenance proved too labor intensive for us. Feeding for three hours every day, mucking out stalls + horse trough, providing new hay and straw and filling the water troughs. If you also have to work, renovate and run your daily household, it takes a lot of time.
We had to make choices. Since April of this year, they are now at an equestrian center in Luzy. Here they are very well cared for and Joop also gets riding lessons. We did decide that next spring they will come back for a few months because then we can use them as lawn mowers.
The website you're looking at now went live
In April of this year, we put our website online. This site was designed by our daughters Carolien and Renée. In our opinion the site is clear, informative and the reader can immediately see if the gite is available in the period he/she wishes to come. The calendars of Natuurhuisje.nl and Airbnb are also linked to it. We are very proud of it. Renée is available for more jobs, should you also want such a beautiful website.
New entrance sign
In April we placed a pole at the entrance to our yard with a cast iron sign there which makes it clear that you are at Le Moulin d’Ávrée
Milou: queen in France
Milou is the big, sweet guard dog of our territory. At the slightest movement that takes place in our yard, she gets up and starts barking loudly, she runs outside, if possible, and repeats the barking a few more times. Each time this produces a heartache in us. After she has inspected the territory, she calmly returns and lies down in her basket. If there is a strange car or person, she keeps barking and waits for us to come.
Heavy rain in spring
In the spring, it was especially wet. From conversations with fellow villagers, it has not been this wet in the past 30 years. It resulted in our island being completely flooded for the second time this year. Besides being so wet, it also froze heavily in April, resulting in the burgeoning blossoms of several trees being broken. However, the weather situation did provide beautiful pictures.
