Enjoying the job

Sunday, Feb. 13, we couldn’t believe our luck: we got to go back to our brand new dream house in Avrée for another week. Now with really a lot of stuff, but not really “over” yet. Packed and packed, better said, be-car-packed, we drove the route across Paris early in the morning. We had never driven this route toward the Morvan before. It turned out to be a good choice, as it was the fastest route so far! In 10.5 hours we were in front of our red gate.

An incredibly valuable week

It was a very valuable week. We are very advanced with the work on the residence. It’s hard work, but because there are two of us doing it, it doesn’t really feel like a burden. We work when we want to and we know what we are doing it for. Next time we can start painting the gite. This should be finished by the end of May, as that is when the first tenants will arrive! Starting with friends and family this summer.

Monday: getting used to the countryside

We began Monday morning by walking through the house to see if everything was as we had left it. Everything was still doing it, and something had added itself mouse droppings. Oops, that wasn’t the intention. You live in the countryside or not.

Tuesday: ready to go? Job!

Tuesday we started chores. Joop’s goal for this week was to tile the kitchen. Myself, Henri, wanted to paint as much as possible. With some pride I can say that we both met our goal. Just look at Joop’s action photos. The entire downstairs is now painted except for a small area.

Also on Tuesday, a lady came by to explain to us a few things about the river: what is allowed, what is not allowed and who is responsible for what. Say a kind of state bosom lady. So we are not allowed to just change the course of the river, we have to take good care of the flora and fauna of the river, and we are responsible for all the trees on our land. So we become sort of state forest management employees. Nice!

"Wij worden dus een soort van staatsbos-beheer-medewerkers. Leuk!"

Wednesday: getting financial affairs in order

On Wednesday, we visited the company ”passe partout.” This company, all women by the way, are going to help us with financial matters in France. After 2.5 hours, we had red ears from listening and a dry mouth from talking. Fortunately, there was a restaurant across the street where we enjoyed a delicious lunch.

Friday: 83km drive for WiFi

On Friday, we bought a 4G box for the necessary wifi connection. Then you really notice that you live in the countryside. We had to drive 83 kilometers to get there! So we just made a nice day of it. Fortunately the 4G-Box worked, we didn’t feel like driving again to exchange it. But now you can all use the Internet while you’re here, too!

The real move is coming

When we go back in early May, we will also sleep in our own house in our own bed for the first time. Exciting all. Our plan then is to have our house in Emmen empty, leave what needs to stay in Emmen in Emmen and load what needs to go with us to Avrée in a truck.

It was a wonderful week in which we once again met many nice and lovely people, had many new experiences and were able to do a lot of work on our home. But now first enjoy a glass of wine….

Salut!

Joop et Henri
